Traumatic Dental Injuries: In the event of a knocked-out permanent tooth, quick thinking and immediate action are vital. To increase the chances of saving the tooth, pick it up by the crown (the top part) without touching the root. Rinse it gently with water and try to reinsert it into its socket, ensuring it’s facing the correct way. Apply gentle pressure to hold it in place as you head to the dental office or emergency room. If replanting it immediately isn’t possible, place the tooth between the patient's cheek and gum or in a container of cold milk.

For more traumatic injuries, such as a tooth that has been moved or loosened, seek treatment within six hours. If there is uncontrollable bleeding, go directly to the emergency room. Most dental injuries, fortunately, are less severe, with chipped teeth being the most common. If a tooth is chipped, locate any broken pieces as they might be reattachable. Schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible and bring the pieces with you.

Tooth Pain: Acute or persistent tooth pain is a clear signal that you need to visit the dental office urgently. The most common cause of dental pain is tooth decay, a bacterial infection that can penetrate various parts of the tooth and even extend into the gum tissue. Sometimes, tooth pain may indicate the need for a root canal treatment — a procedure designed to alleviate the pain from an infection deep within the tooth and potentially save the tooth from extraction. Other causes of tooth pain can include a loose filling or tooth sensitivity. The only way to determine the exact cause of your tooth pain is to schedule an appointment with your dentist immediately.

Gum Emergencies: Injuries and infections involving the soft tissues of the mouth often require emergency treatment. The gums, tongue, and cheek lining can be damaged by accidental bites, falls, sports injuries, and scalding liquids. These tissues may also be injured by foreign objects lodged below the gum line or develop painful and potentially serious abscesses. A periodontal (gum) abscess, a pus-filled sac caused by infection, is usually very painful and requires immediate attention from a dentist.

For any injury to the soft tissues of the mouth, rinse the area with a solution of diluted salt water. Remove any visible debris. To control bleeding, press a clean, damp cloth or gauze to the area for 10-15 minutes. If bleeding does not stop, go to the emergency room immediately.

If a foreign object is stuck beneath the gum line, it can sometimes be gently dislodged with dental floss or a toothpick. If this isn't possible or causes discomfort, make a dental appointment promptly to prevent further damage or infection.

Orthodontic Emergencies: While orthodontic treatment can cause some discomfort, true orthodontic emergencies are rare. These emergencies include trauma or injury to the teeth, face, or mouth; infections or swelling of the gums, mouth, or face; and severe, unmanageable pain in these areas. In such cases, seek immediate care from your dental office or an emergency room, whichever is more accessible.

For issues like loose, broken, or irritating orthodontic hardware, contact your dental office for guidance on managing the situation.
